Understanding Subnetting

Subnetting is the practice of dividing a network into two or more networks.

Definitions

• IP Address: A unique address that identifies a device on the internet or a local network.
• Subnet Mask: A numbered that defines the range of IP addresses available within a network.
• CIDR (Classless Inter-Domain Routing): A compact representation of an IP address and its associated routing prefix (e.g., /24).

Calculations

• Network Address: The first address in the subnet (bitwise AND of IP and Mask).
• Broadcast Address: The last address in the subnet (used to send data to all hosts).
• Host Range: The addresses between Network and Broadcast.
