About this calculator
About the Seeding Rate Calculator
Seeding rate sits at the intersection of agronomy and economics. Seed is a significant input cost, and the rate you choose sets your plant population, which in turn drives yield potential, weed competition, and disease risk. This calculator converts your field area and target seeding rate into the total seed to purchase, and — when you add seeds per pound and germination — the live plant stand you can expect.
The Core Calculations
The base figure is straightforward:
Total seed (lb) = seeding rate (lb/acre) × area (acres)
To estimate the stand that actually establishes, the calculator applies seed size and germination:
Live plants = total seed (lb) × seeds per lb × germination %
Plants per acre is that total divided by acreage; plants per square foot divides by total area (1 acre = 43,560 ft²).
Pure Live Seed: Seed by Viability, Not Just Weight
Professionals plant on a Pure Live Seed (PLS) basis so they're paying for seed that will actually grow:
PLS % = purity % × germination %
A bag that is 95% pure with 85% germination is only about 81% PLS. To hit a target stand you divide the desired pure-live rate by the PLS fraction — so lower-quality seed requires a higher bulk rate. Always use the germination and purity from the current seed tag, not a default, because both decline as seed ages.
From Target Population to Seeding Rate
Many crops are planted to a target plant population rather than a weight. Two corrections turn that target into a real-world rate:
- Seed size (seeds per lb / thousand-seed weight) converts plant count to weight.
- Field emergence (a mortality factor) accounts for seeds that germinate in the lab but never establish in the field — drilled stands often realize 75–90% of seeded plants, broadcast stands far less.
| Crop (typical) | Common target | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Corn | 30,000–36,000 seeds/acre | Precision-planted to a final stand |
| Soybeans | 120,000–160,000 seeds/acre | Tolerates a wide population range |
| Wheat (drilled) | 1.2–1.6 million seeds/acre | Raise rate for late planting |
| Forage grasses | small-seeded, high count/lb | Broadcast rates run higher |
Calibration and Why It Matters
Even a perfect calculation fails if the drill or spreader is not calibrated — meter wear and seed size shift the actual rate. Calibrate to the seed lot before planting. Under-seeding leaves yield and open ground for weeds; over-seeding wastes costly seed and can increase lodging, humidity, and disease in a crowded canopy. Calculating the rate first keeps both errors in check.
Precision Agriculture: Seeding Rates
Calculating the correct seeding rate is the foundation of a profitable harvest. Planting too densely leads to extreme competition for water, sunlight, and nutrients, resulting in stunted plants and lower yields. Planting too sparsely wastes valuable acreage and allows weeds to dominate the field. Our Seeding Rate Calculator helps farmers determine the exact pounds or seeds per acre required for optimal crop emergence.
Factors Influencing Seeding Rates
A seeding calculation is never just based on acreage. It must account for Pure Live Seed (PLS). PLS is calculated by multiplying the seed batch's purity percentage by its germination rate. If a bag of wheat seed has a 90% germination rate and is 95% pure, the PLS is 85.5%. You must increase the bulk amount of seed you plant to compensate for the 14.5% that consists of chaff or dead seeds. Furthermore, soil conditions, expected mortality rates, and drill calibration all impact the final target seeding rate.
Frequently Asked Questions
How do I calculate how much seed I need?
Multiply the seeding rate in pounds per acre by the number of acres. For 40 lb/acre across 10 acres, you need 400 lb of seed before adjusting for quality.
What is Pure Live Seed (PLS)?
PLS is purity percent multiplied by germination percent. Seeding on a PLS basis means you plant viable seed; lower-quality lots need a higher bulk rate to reach the same stand.
Why does seeds-per-pound matter so much?
It converts seed weight into seed count, which determines plant population. Two crops at the same pounds per acre can produce very different stands if their seed sizes differ.
Should I increase the rate for broadcasting or late planting?
Yes. Broadcast seeding has lower establishment than drilling, and late planting reduces tillering, so both call for higher rates to reach the target stand.
Does a higher seeding rate always mean higher yield?
No. Beyond the optimum, extra plants compete with each other and can increase lodging and disease while wasting seed. Aim for the research-based optimum for your crop and region.
